Belted Galloways are easily distinguished from other breeds by a unique white belt around the midriff. Belted Galloways, or Belties, are among the world's oldest cattle breeds. They were developed during the 17th century in the
Scottish province of Galloway, a rough, mountainous region where hardiness was necessary for survival.
Belties are naturally polled and a pleasant disposition. They have double hair coats that allows them to weather extreme cold without the extra layer of backfat required by other breeds. Belted Galloways are exceptionally long lived, often producing calves into their late teens.
Belties produce some of the best fine-grained, naturally lean beef available. Laboratory analyses have proven it to be low in both total fat and harmful saturated fat, and high in beneficial Omega 3 fatty acid. Because the Beltie doesn't need excessive backfat, trim fat averages considerably less than in other commercial cattle. Most Belted Galloway steers have been graded Choice or Choice + with carcasses rated Yield Grade 2.
